Here’s the thing: your ex isn’t the only person who shouldn’t have your password.   Your best friend doesn’t need it, your colleague doesn’t need it, umakhelwane wakho akayidingi and that person in your DMs promising you that you have ‘won R30 000’ worse keloyo akayidingi nhlobo.   This Cyber Month, we are talking about something we all use every day but sometimes take way too lightly… Password Security.     Your Password Is Your Digital Lock🔐   Think of your password as the key to your digital house. You wouldn’t hand someone the keys to your home and say, “Just lock up when you’re done” - so why do it with your email, social media, banking or other important accounts? Why wenza kanjalo?   A strong password is one of the simplest ways to protect your digital life!   And NO, ‘Password123’ is not strong. 😭   Very weak, that one!   Neither is your name, birthday, favourite soccer team or the name of your child followed by ’123’. If someone knows a little about you, those are some of the first things they could try… Yeka!     One Password for Everything? Yoh 😭   We get it, remembering passwords is annoying but using the same password for everything is basically saying:   “If you get into one account, please feel free to visit the others.”   If one account is compromised, criminals may try the same username and password combination on your other accounts. Instead, use different passwords for important accounts, especially your email, banking and social media.   A password manager can also help you create and securely store strong, unique passwords without you having to remember every single one.     Don’t Click First. Think First 👀   Cybersecurity isn’t only about passwords. Scammers are getting better at making fake messages look real.   You might receive a message saying:   “Congratulations! You’ve won!”   “Your account will be suspended. Click here to verify.”   Before clicking anything, stop and check. Uyeke ukuthanda izinto 🙄   Look at the sender. Check the link. Ask yourself whether the message makes sense.   If you’re unsure, go directly to the company’s official website or app instead of using the link in the message.   If it feels too good to be true, don’t let the excitement make the decision for you.     And About That Wi-Fi Password…🛜   Your home Wi-Fi password deserves some attention too. Avoid using something that’s easy to guess, such as your surname, house number or phone number.   Create a strong Wi-Fi password and change it if you believe someone who shouldn’t have access has obtained it.   Remember: your Wi-Fi password isn’t a community service. 🤣   You don’t have to give it to every visitor who walks through the door. “Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu”   You have probably heard it from uMagogo, your teacher, your Auntie or that one person who suddenly becomes a philosopher at a family gathering.   It means “I am because we are.”   And honestly? South Africans have been practising Ubuntu long before Wi-Fi was even a thing. We have always been about community, umndeni, sharing, checking up on each other and making sure nobody is left behind.   The only thing that has changed is how we connect.   <a>From “Zwakala eKasi”to “Send Me the Location”.</a>   Back in the day, staying connected meant pulling up edladleni kumacala and shouting:   “Ngine sgaxa sendaba”.   No text. No WhatsApp. No location pin.   You just showed up!   Namhlanje it’s:   “Ukuphi?”   “Send location.”   “I’m outside!” 🤣   Technology has changed the way we find each other, but that South African spirit of showing up is still very much alive.   Ubuntu Has Entered the Group Chat   Asibe ne vaar.   The family WhatsApp group is basically a digital extension of the family lounge. Someone sends a “Good morning” picture at 6AM, uAuntie sends a voice note ya 7 minutes lapho wena uthi yingoma. 🙈   Gogo sends a prayer.💓   Someone asks:   “Who is coming home this weekend?”   …and before you know it, the whole family is talking.   That’s Ubuntu, just with notifications.   Our Culture Is Online and It’s Not Going Anywhere   Mzansi culture has entered the digital space and we are making noise. Asiyi Ndawo!   Our music is trending.   Our lingo/slang is going viral.   Our food is getting TikTok famous.   Our fashion is being showcased around the world.   Our languages are being heard across social media.   And our humour?   Sharp! Nobody is safe. 🤣   From amapiano dance challenges to hilarious family memes, we are taking pieces of who we are and putting them online for the world to see.   Technology is not replacing our culture. We are using technology to amplify it.   Even Gogo Is Getting Connected   Let’s talk about the real digital transformation.   The day Gogo asks:   “What’s the Wi-Fi password?”   … is when you know technology has officially arrived. 🤣   Today, our older generation can video call family members who live far away, watch church services online, learn new things and stay connected with their grandchildren.   Distance doesn’t feel quite as far when everyone can simply jump on a video call.   And yes, Gogo might still ask you to come visit in person… some things will never change.   We Can Be Digital Without Forgetting Who We Are   Being connected to the world doesn’t mean becoming disconnected from our roots. We can still jam to the latest hits and still dance to songs we grew up with.   We can post on TikTok and still listen to Gogo’s stories.   We can send a WhatsApp instead of knocking on someone’ door but still make time to visit.   We can embrace new technology, while keeping our languages, traditions, food, music and stories alive.   That’s the beauty of Ubuntu in the digital age.   We do not have to choose between where we are going forward and where we come from. We carry both. 😊   Ubuntu Meets the Digital Age   At its heart, Wi-Fi is about connection.   Connecting your family.   Connecting your hustle.   Connecting your entertainment. The painful truth is that Data is NOT for home. It’s for outside. It’s for the taxi. It’s for load shedding. It’s for when Wi-Fi is weak at gran’s house, or by that stingy uncle who won’t pay for a router. However, because your connection is weak, slow, or moody, your Data is working overtime, which isn’t fair on your phone or your budget.   You see, when Wi-Fi is right, you don’t need to worry. Your phone stays connected, videos just play, updates don’t take six years, and your mobile Data lasts longer than your previous relationship. THE REAL STRUGGLES   Life without Wi-Fi eKasie means standing outside the gate hunting for signal like amazamazama looking for Gold.   Asking your neighbor “Makhi weeh kana ithini  I password?” Lapho ukwate?.   One data usekingeni ngoba the hotspot fights in the house it’s like fighting for a plate with the biggest piece of meat ?; Data finishing before payday that time umpunga awuna nix… ZYAKHALA ?.   In today’s kasi, Wi-Fi is not a luxury. It’s survival.   WI-FI IS THE NEW ELECTRICITY   Back in the day, candles meant loadshedding, Ah Manje?   No Wi-Fi feels worse than no lights. It is not panic yet, it’s not anger- still loading. It’s that blank, frozen expression where your soul briefly leaves your body while your phone desperately searches for bars that do not exist.   This time it’s not buffering, Wi-Fi dololo ?   CONFUSION   HAIBO...  That’s strange. You open your Instagram, nothing loads, you refresh still dololo, you switch to WhatsApp same story. You tilt your phone slightly, as if gravity might help the signal fall into place. Your faces say “Kanti kwenzakalani ?”   DENIAL (AH IZOBUYA)   You tell yourself “Nah it’s just slow iyabuya nou “ufaka I phone ku Aeroplane mode, then off again like you ‘re rebooting the entire country’s network. Your face has hope – false hope but hope, nonetheless.   You walk outside; you stand next to the gate. You move close to the wall sekushubile manje kunini, you lift your phone high like you’re searching for your ancestors ?. Someone passes and asks “YINI? UFUNANI LAPHO?” and you reply “Network “. ?   Your Face is serious. This is serious ukhenyekile klaar .   NOMA, I BAR EY ONE KEH   You start negotiating with the internet Gods, you have been offline for too long and it’s frustrating.   “Just load this one status ..Ngiyacela bandla ”   Your face is pleading. Humble. You have been humbled by your Service Provider (pick your fighter) it’s not HYPA.   ACCEPTANCE (YAZIN’ KU GRAND) ?   You put the phone down and sit outside while watching the kids play. Ekasi or Emakhaya during Christmas is a real luxury resort.    THE JOURNEY: Pakisha umthwalo asambeni ??   No Christmas kwaGogo adventure begins without chaotic travel. You might find yourself sharing a bed with three cousins, a baby and their big teddy bear because they can’t sleep without it. And that’s considered as VIP.
